To combat the gentrification of San Francisco and the massive displacement of communities of color from the city, the working class, Filipino South of Market (SoMA) neighborhood was recently named a Filipino cultural heritage district, SoMA Pilipinas. However, just as this cultural heritage district is being established, Pampalasa—a year-old Filipino restaurant that quickly became integrated into the community, particularly community organizing spaces—is closing, priced out. Yet this young casualty of gentrification still appears on Google Maps. The projection of the restaurant’s Google Maps image onto an empty facade conjures the ghost of a beloved cultural institution, and the distorting and flickering of the image references the speed at which gentrification shutters these businesses.
