Asphalt, cardboard

This sculpture is inspired by the Victoria, the ship that brought Magellan to the Philippines, where he began Spanish colonization and met his end at the hands of Lapu Lapu. Magellan and Lapu Lapu are also the names of two streets in San Francisco. As the underground component of a site-specific, multi-level installation, its coating of asphalt evokes city streets and the pitch-covered ships of Western colonization.
